Distribution of the mtDNA macrohaplogroup L in Northeast Africa and the Arabian peninsula. Most of the Afro-Asiatic speakers in northern Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Egypt, Yemen and Oman carry derivatives of the Eurasian M and N maternal lineages (60%-84%); the remaining individuals bear derivatives of the Africa-centered L macroclade (16%-40%). This accords well with the hypothesis that ancient Punt was located in the Red Sea area (Non (2010)).
