A 4th century CE Kingdom of Axum bust excavated in Ethiopia. The figure’s greatly projecting nose and large eyes are leitmotifs in Axumite art, reflecting the Sabaean origins of Axum’s founders. These Sabaeans settled amongst Cushitic-speaking Agaws (ancestors of the Abyssinians) and introduced to them Semitic languages (Artkhade).
